God’s Word has a lot to say about hearts. We are told if we give God first place in our lives then we will receive “the desires of our heart”. (Psalm 37:4) In Psalm 51:10 the writer pleads for forgiveness and asks that God give him a pure heart. In Ezekiel 36:26 God promises to give His people a new heart. Jesus said in Matthew 6:21 that whatever we treasure the most will also hold our hearts. Then in chapter 22:37 also in the book of Matthew, Jesus said that we are to love the Lord with all our heart…
Yes, the condition of our hearts is very important. Jesus explained it to His disciples like this: It isn’t what goes into the body that defiles it, but what comes from the heart, Mark 7:20. He was telling them, and us, that what we think, say and see ultimately will have an affect on our lives.
It is very important to guard our hearts against worldly thoughts and ways. The programs we watch, the company we keep, the words that we read and the attitudes that we develop are all a result of the condition of our heart. As God’s light in the world, we should strive to keep our hearts pure and upright. Our actions will show others how we “think in our hearts”.
