In His Praise — February 20, 2022

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Luke 6:38

At first glance one might think this verse is all about getting blessings for ourselves. In a way it is, but a deeper look at these words and the verses before and after it reveal that Jesus was once again trying to teach people how to treat each other and how to walk like Him.

Beginning in verse 27 of this same chapter Jesus repeats the words that so many have grown up hearing — “Love your enemies’, “Do good to others” and “Treat others like you want to be treated”, “Do not judge”. All of these are true words and important to remember in our daily lives. They sound simple to follow, but Jesus has a bigger lesson for us to learn. Not only are we to be generous with material things and help those in need. We are  also to be generous with our  love, forgiveness  and acceptance others. Jesus is telling us that our job is not to judge others, but to share His kind of agape love with them.

Why should we do this when others may not appreciate it or return the love to us? Verse 38 explains the answer. God sees our hearts and when He sees love for others in us and true kindness  being shown, He blesses us. His forgiveness and blessings will be poured out on us. So much that it will be as if they are overflowing into our laps!

What a beautiful image this brings to mind! We serve such a wonderful, good God!
