Hatred, mistrust, discord — these are all too common today. We see examples everyday of divisions among groups. People take sides over almost anything, opinions of others are not respected, unkind words are spoken and hurtful actions are taken. This has become the “way of the world”. Even among Christians there can be differences that cause people to leave churches or even cause churches to split.
But what does the Bible have to say about such behavior? First of all, we need to know that discord is not of God, it is the work of Satan. His desire is to cause conflict, confusion and to lie. (see John 8:44). God desires peace, harmony and good for all His children. God tells us that it is “good and pleasant when brothers live together in unity” (Psalm 133:1).
So as children of God we are called to strive for unity. It may not always be easy, but the good news is that we don’t have to face these challenges on our own. By reading God’s word and being grounded in it and by praying and trusting His guidance we can be a light to others, we can bring peace and harmony as we share our love for God in this world.
