“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name…” Matthew 6:9b These are the words Jesus used to begin His prayer to Father God. Many of us know this prayer (the Lord’s Prayer) by heart and have repeated it numerous times. It is very familiar to Christians.   Let’s look at what this first sentence really means though. As we address God and approach His throne, it should be with the utmost respect, reverence and humility. This simple verse does that very thing. The word “hallowed” means to be made holy or consecrated, another description says to be greatly revered or honored.  Jesus was giving praise, honor and reverence to God. “The Lord is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made.” Psalm 145:13b  This verse  should fill our hearts with praise and thankfulness. It should make us overflow with joy to know that we serve such a God  as this. One whose word is full of real promises for us. Promises that are true. Promises that will never change or go away, for God never changes His mind or takes back His word. We can depend on God to do whatever He has said He will do. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with his singing.” Zephaniah 3:17 What comfort and joy these words bring to our mind and soul. In times of trouble or distress, God is with us. He protects us, delights in us, soothes us and even joyfully sings over us. Why? Because He loves us! What a wonderful God we serve.! For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.”  Psalm 100:4-5. These are beautiful words of praise for our God. When we draw near to Him, whether in church, at home or any other place, we should always have praise on our lips and thanksgiving in our hearts. “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” Ephesians 6:13 We hear the term “stand your ground” used from time to time today. Basically standing your ground means not backing down in the face of controversy. In today’s scripture we read those same words used to encourage and instruct God’s people when dealing with evil that comes into our lives. The verses, just after this one (Ephesians 6:14-18), describe how Christians should prepare for the battles that will be encountered.  We must protect ourselves by being wrapped in God’s truth and righteousness. Leaves are changing colors, temperatures are beginning to cool off, fall mornings are nice and crisp. Children and adults alike enjoy seeing pumpkins, gourds and other seasonal decoration start to appear.  Our minds are turned to hayrides, football games, bonfires and other fall activities. “The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” James 5:16b This scripture is found in a section in the NIV Bible subtitled The Prayer of Faith.  In the verses just before this one, some questions are asked, “Is any one in trouble? Is any one happy? Is anyone sick?  The remedy for all of these is to pray. When we converse with God and bring our concerns and joys to Him (and that is what prayer is), we are opening up to all the power, might and love that can be imagined. God has all the answers.
