In His Praise — June 18, 2017

Today is Father’s Day. A day when much is said and done to honor our earthly dads. We buy gifts, prepare their favorite food, and try to spend some extra time with these men that are so important in our lives. A godly father is truly a treasure here on earth.

But God does not call every man to be a dad, to father children and raise a family. Some may never marry or may never have children. But God does call every man to serve Him — to be a good, upright man that strives to live in a right relationship with the Heavenly Father. Such men are a blessing too.

It is good news to know that God has a plan for everyone and He is calling men, women and children into His service daily and equipping them for the task before them.

There are many things in this world that are unsettling — things like crime, prejudice, terrorism, and all kinds of uncertainties. Everyday life can be stressful; money problems loom, family situations explode and misunderstandings can become volatile. These things threaten to rob us of our joy and our peace.
But we don’t have to live with such anxiety. Jesus has promised us His peace. This is a peace that we cannot understand, a peace that goes beyond our human knowledge, a peace that can steady our lives when everything seems to be turned upside down. In John 14:27 Jesus says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.”

What good news to know that Jesus’ promises are right and true and they last forever, even for you and me!

Here are some great points that Rev. Nickles made today during his sermon:
God never runs out of forgiveness.
God is our help and our hope.
When the Israelites cried out in the Old Testament, God sent a deliverer to bring them out of bondage.
In the New Testament when mankind cried out, God sent Jesus.
Jesus lived, died on the cross and rose to life again that we might have salvation.
When Jesus went back to heaven, He sent the Holy Spirit to be our comforter and helper.
God always listens and always hears us and always helps us.
God is love.
Now that is GOOD NEWS!!

Good News! God loves us in spite of our faults. The Adult Sunday School Class here at East Point has been involved in a study of the book of Jonah. Jonah was a man that God called to go to the city of Nineveh and preach repentance. But Jonah didn’t want to go, so he hopped on a ship going in the opposite direction. While on the ship a great storm came up and the sailors thought they were going to die, until Jonah admitted that the storm was his fault and told them to throw him overboard. They did, the storm settled, and God sent a big fish to swallow Jonah and rescue him from the water. Jonah stayed in the belly of this fish for 3 days and while there he prayed to God. God then caused the fish to spit Jonah up safely on the shore. Jonah then followed God’s command and went to Nineveh, but he still was not happy about it. We find in chapter 4 of this book that Jonah was actually pouting because God had chosen to spare the citizens of Nineveh, and he wasn’t afraid to speak to God about it either. But God, in His great love for Jonah and all people didn’t become angry and send a lightning bolt to strike Jonah or banish him to some far away land. No, He gently reminded Jonah that He alone is the creator of all things and Jonah had no right to be angry about any decision that He had made.

We’re like Jonah sometimes when things don’t go the way we want. We pout, we get angry and lash out to others and even to God. But, it is truly great news to know that God doesn’t stop loving us and He doesn’t forget about us or ignore us. God’s desire is for all people to live in fellowship with Him and He is patient, long-suffering and loving as we find our way to Him.

Do you have questions, mysteries in your life that you just don’t understand? Do you wonder why things happen a certain way or what some actions really mean or if they have a meaning at all? We all do from time to time.

In the book of Daniel we find that Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, had such a dilemma. He had had a dream and was bothered by it and none of his wisest men could tell him anything about the dream. The meaning of the dream was a mystery to Nebuchadnezzar and he wanted answers, he wanted his magicians, sorcerers, astrologers and advisers to tell him what the dream was, and to explain its meaning. Of course they were not able to do this. That’s when God’s man, Daniel, stepped in. Daniel asked the king for time to be able to interpret the dream. The king agreed and Daniel immediately went to the source of all knowledge — God. He enlisted his 3 friends to join him in praying to God for mercy and to reveal the dream and its meaning. God granted Daniel’s request and Daniel was able to return to King Nebuchadnezzar and give him the information desired.

Now what is the point of all of this , you might ask? Well, Daniel not only prayed for God’s help and received it, but he also remembered to thank God and praise Him. In Daniel 2:21b – 22 Daniel, speaking of God, says, “He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning, He reveals deep and hidden things…” When we encounter mysteries, questions and other troublesome problems in our lives, we too can turn to God. We can ask for mercy, understanding and guidance and He will hear us. As we diligently seek Him, He will reveal to us answers to our deepest mysteries. He will bring peace to our lives and He will assure us with hope.

Now that is good news!

In His Praise — May 7, 2017

The message of “good news” from East Point this week is very simple and probably very familiar. It is that “God is great and God is good.” God is greater than any mountain in our life and He always works for our good. This knowledge can give us peace that passes all understanding, hope for a future and joy for the journey. It truly is good to know that God is great and God is good — all the time!

In His Praise – April 30, 2017

GOOD NEWS!! God can change any situation in our lives. There is nothing so bad nor any circumstance too severe that God cannot intervene and bring about change. In 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 we read that we do not war (or fight) against problems in our lives like the world does. As Christians we have divine power through Christ to demolish strongholds, arguments and “every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God.” It is wonderful to know that God will always love us and is always ready to stand with us and for us. We need only to claim Jesus as our Savior and accept His salvation to gain this divine protection.

This does not mean that life will always be great and there will never be a problem. But even better, it means that when struggles come our way, we have a great and mighty advocate to help and to guide us through.

Thanks be to God!

When something good happens to us, don’t we want to share it with our loved ones and those closest to us? That was what happened on the road to Emmaus to two of Jesus’ followers. The story is found in Luke 24:13-18. There were two walking along discussing the recent events of Jesus’ death and the mystery of His resurrection when Jesus himself joined them! At first they didn’t recognized Him, but later Jesus revealed himself to them, but then vanished again. The scripture says that the two followers got up at once, returned to Jerusalem, (which was about seven miles away), found the rest of the disciples and shared with them what had happened. They had good news that Jesus was alive and they were eager to share it!

We too can share the good news of Jesus with others. We can share His word and His love. We can share how He died for our sins, rose again to life and gives the free gift of salvation to anyone that will repent of their sins, ask forgiveness and accept Him into their life.

We like the followers on the Emmaus road have exciting news that others need to hear. Let’s boldly share it with them.

HE is risen! HE is risen indeed!! What great good news! 1 Peter 1:3-4 says it all: “In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade — kept in heaven for you.”

Praise be to His glorious name forever. Psalm 72:19

In His Praise — April 9, 2017

The “good news” today is found in the book of John, chapter 11, verses 25 and 26. Here Jesus is talking to his friend Martha, who has just experienced the death of her brother only days before. Jesus is reassuring Martha that her brother Lazarus will live again and Martha agrees that she believes in the resurrection of believers after death. But Jesus goes even deeper by telling Martha that He is the resurrection and those that believe in Him will never die! As we follow the rest of this story in chapter 11 we find that moments later Jesus summoned Lazarus from his grave and Lazarus did indeed come back to life. What joy Lazarus and his family must have felt to be reunited once again! What a blessing it must have been for them to be able to call Jesus their friend! Perhaps Lazarus, Martha and their other sister Mary told this story over and over to others to witness about their Lord.

We too can have the joy of calling Jesus our friend. This eternal life that Jesus offers is not just for an elect few, it is for anyone that will believe on Him and accept His salvation. The “good news” is the same for us as it was for Martha. Just as Jesus said to her “…he who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die…” He also speaks to us. Jesus took the punishment for all our wrongdoings when He died on the cross, but, praise God, He came back to life and conquered death that we too might have eternal life.
