Children’s children are a crown to the aged, …” Proverbs 17:6
If you are blessed to be a grandparent, congratulations, and Happy Grandparent’s Day! Being a grandparent is an awesome and delightful experience. It is a privilege that some will never enjoy. It is life changing; and it is a blessing that is indescribable! Most grandparents that I know will do almost anything, within reason, for their precious little ones.
It doesn’t stop when these little ones grow up either. Grandparents may purchase that first car for them, support them in all kinds of activities, or help them open their first bank account. Grandparents seem to always understand and have an ear to listen. Grandparents proudly tell about their grandchildren’s accomplishments throughout life. Their successes in school and work, their triumphs, the good decisions they make and the good people they turn out to be can all be bragging points for grandparents. The bond between a grandparent and grandchild is truly special.
Being a grandparent is not only a blessing from God, but also a great responsibility. Today’s children are exposed to more stress, trauma, tough decisions, bad environments and evil than any generation before them. So what can we as Christian grandparents do to help our future generations deal with the world? The answer is found in Psalms 145:4, “One generation will commend your works to another…”
Our job (responsibility) as grandparents is not only to spoil these precious ones, but more importantly to teach them about God and His love. We should share our faith with them. We should set an example so they learn to pray, to listen to and read God’s word, to apply it to their lives as they grow and to always to know that they are loved by an almighty and caring God that calls them His own.
