Today is Veteran’s Day and East Point Cumberland Presbyterian Church would like to thank all the veterans and military people that help protect our country. Soldiers are special people. They must be brave, committed, selfless and determined to do their best. Not everybody can be a soldier. Soldiers go through training and spend time learning skills that help them to do their jobs well. We could even call them warriors. Warriors that fight for right and help protect our freedoms.
In the book of Judges we hear a story of another kind of warrior. In chapter 6 of this book, we read about a man named Gideon. Gideon’s people were being oppressed and mistreated. Now Gideon did not think of himself as a warrior, but an angel of the Lord appeared to him and called him “mighty warrior” (vs. 12). As many of us would have probably reacted, Gideon’s response was that of doubt. He pointed out that his family was weak and that he was unimportant. But God answered by reassuring Gideon that He was with him and that he would be successful in battle for the Lord. By believing and trusting the Lord Gideon did become a mighty warrior for God.
We’re like Gideon sometimes. We feel inadequate, unimportant, small and useless. But when God calls us for service and we follow, we can be mighty warriors for Him. On our own we are can do nothing, but God will supply whatever we need to accomplish the work He gives us to do.
Now that is good news!
