We Americans cherish our freedoms and this week we will be celebrating our country’s independence and all the rights that come with it. There will be family gatherings, cookouts, and fireworks. American flags will be flying, speeches may even be made to commemorate this freedom that we all cherish. All of this is great and our American heritage should be remembered.
But let us also remember that all of these blessings are a gift from God. He has blessed our nation abundantly. All of the freedoms that we Americans enjoy are possible because God has made them so. God has watched over soldiers as they have marched off to war to defend our nation, He has blessed our leaders with wisdom to make good decisions for our country and He has intervened and protected our country from things that are not good for us. The United States of America is not perfect, but we do have much to be thankful for and much to celebrate.
Along with our freedoms come responsibilities though. The Bible tells us in 1 Peter 2:16 “Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God.” As Christians it is important that we use our freedom in God to share His love with the world. As we have opportunity let us use our freedom in God to show kindness, patience and most of all love to our fellowman.
So as we join in all the patriotic festivities of the week, let’s remember first to thank our Almighty God for giving us true freedom through Him.
